As mentioned in the book, simultaneous with the eighteenth century and the rise of liberal individualism, this belief that family forms the ancient foundations of the society was shattered in a way that the history of family in 19th and 20th century was viewed as the history of degeneration; an increase in the number of divorce and weakening of husbandly and fatherhood authority was the obvious sign of this collapse.

Philippe Aries believes that family has played an important role in industrial societies and has had an impact on human conditions. “Centuries of Childhood: A Social History of Family Life” is compiled in three sections, each of which includes different chapters.

In the first part of the book titled “The Idea of Childhood” is about themes such as “Seasons of Life, Discovering Childhood, Children Outfit, The History of Games, Entertainments and Two Concepts from Childhood”.
