According to Kanoon General Directorate for Public Relations and International Affairs, this book belongs to the Series of the “Book of Fame” that narrates Shahnameh stories by Hakim Abolghasem Ferdowsi, the four-century epic poet, with simple and contemporary prose for adolescents.
The summary of the story is as follows; Sam, the Iranian champion and warrior, takes his albino son to the mountains since he is not like others. His hair and eyelashes are all white. The phoenix, a mythical bird, takes care of Zal. Sam once dreams that his son is still alive and he starts looking for him. Zal finally goes home, but the phoenix always supports him.
Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults published the Farsi version of the book in 2013 for the first time.
Maneli Manuchehri, the illustrator of the book, won Mehdi Azar Yazdi art-literature prize. The illustrations of the book are reckoned as appreciated rewriting and recreating in the first round of the prize in 2015. The illustrator won the appreciation tablet and cash of this prize.
The book is published in Braille for the visually impaired audience. The narration of the book by two storytellers have won the prize of international storytelling in two rounds of the International Storytelling Festival.
In 2016, Children's Book Council listed “Zal and Phoenix” in the Honor List of International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) for its illustrations. In 2014, it was introduced as the selected book by Children's Book Council.
In 1977, Ali Akbar Sadeghi had made an animation based on “Zal and the Phoenix” with Kanoon as the producer, a success in many international festivals.
This book, translated by Siamak Mazloomi, is suitable for children over twelve years old.
