“In the Shadow of the Cypress”, an Animation from Iran, Managed to Obtain an Oscar!

“In the Shadow of the Cypress” produced by Kanoon is the first animation from Iran standing on top of the most credited cinema event won an Oscar.

According to Kanoon General Directorate for Public Relations and International Affairs, this twenty-minute animation jointly directed by Shirin Sohani and Hossein Molayemi has participated in more than 100 international festivals. It has won more than 20 awards namely the award for the best animation by the Oscar approved festivals. It has been highly welcomed by world film society!
Making way to the list of the five films nominated for the Oscar of short animations at the 97th round, there remained only one step to the receiving the award, and exactly one day before the main ceremony, Emma Thompson, the well-known actor and script writer from Britain, winner of two Oscars, two Golden Globes, two BAFTA Awards, and one Emmy Award, had predicted that the Oscar will go to “In the Shadow of the Cypress” because of its beautiful delicate story.
At the end, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the name of this animation as the winner of the best short animation award from the most prestigious cinematography event. Hossein Molayemi and Shirin Sohani walked to the stage of Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, US to receive their award, for them to hold the Oscar as a great success in their hands.
This award is the first Oscar for Iran Animation Cinema produced by Kanoon and the third Iranian film after “Salesman” and “A Separation” by Asghar Farhadi that manages to obtain the Oscar.
The animation’s high technical and artistic quality along with a manual 2D technique and frame-by-frame, demonstrates the filmmakers' commitment to creating a work of exceptional precision and elegance that managed to capture the attention of the Academy jury.
The film's visual aesthetics and character design were also praised at various festivals, including the award for best character design and animation at the Tehran Animation Biennial.
In 1999, “Children of Heavon” by Majid Majidi produced by Kanoon was listed among the five final films as a nominee for the best foreign film.
“In the Arms of the Tree” directed by Babak Khajehpasha was another Kanoon film introduced to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as Iran’s  official representative for 2025.
