“Bashu, The Little Stranger” by Bahram Beyzai made way to the classics section of Venice International Film Festival

“Bashu, The Little Stranger” is an outstanding and everlasting work by Bahram Beyzai, the Iranian author and film director, which made way to the classics section of the 82nd round of the Italian Film Festival of Venice, La Biennial.

According to Kanoon General Directorate for Public Relations and International Affairs, by announcing the name of “Bashu, the Little Stranger” written and directed by Bahram Beyzai produced by Kanoon, Alberto Barbera, the art manager of this prestigious festival, has named this film as one of the most popular films among Iranians. It is one of the 18 films which made way to the Classics section of this festival from around the world.
The competition section of the Classics section of Venice festival is hosting the screening of 18 restored film by film archives of cultural organizations and film producers from all over the world.
Venice Classics Program is trying to be more open; on one hand by admiring undoubted masterpieces and undisputed masters of cinema history; on the other, by an endeavor to discover the works less paid attention to by the jury of that period. The goal is to retrieve part of the richness of the large cinematography without ignoring various genres.

In this regard, “Bashu, the Little Stranger” directed by the well-known Iran cinema film director, Bahram Beyzai, produced by Kanoon in 1986, has obtained another achievement by making way to Venice Film Festival, Italy.
“Bashu, the Little Stranger” has been recognized as the best film in Iran Cinema History through national and international voting by cinematographers and cinema critiques.
The story of this popular and reminiscent film is about the years of war and the bombardment of south of Iran. It is the story of a little boy called Bashu who has seen his house and family getting demolished. He drops himself to the back of a truck and falls asleep. When he opens his eyes, he finds himself in the jungle in the north of Iran.
He escapes because of the explosions made to built roads. On the other side of the grove, he reaches the paddy field belonging to a woman called Naee living with her two k kids, working while her husband is absent.
Naee gives bread and water to Bashu and tries to discover who he is.

Based on this report, the head of the jury for the Classics section including cinema students is Tommaso Santambrogio, director of “Taxibol” and “Oceans Are the Real Continents”. The awards of the Classics section will be presented to the two sections of the restored films and the best documentary about cinema.
The jury includes 24 students introduced by cinema studies professors from various universities in Italy and Ca' Foscari University of Venice, DSMS.
Venice Classics is a section added in 2012 presenting the best classic films restored at Venice  International Film Festival. This section is collected by Alberto Barbera and with the cooperation of Federico Gironi. It also hosts a collection of documentaries.
