According to Kanoon General Directorate for Public Relations and International Affairs, Kanoon members from various provinces in Iran will participate in “International Exploration for Asteroids” under the supervision of Iran's Center for Modern Science and Technology (ICMST). During the past months and through various stages, they could discover a number of asteroids and registering them at International Co-operation Organization for Astronomical Research.
Campaign for Asteroid Discovering is an International Citizens’ Science Project is supervised by NASA and being held by PanSTARRS. Observatory and the Catalina Sky Survey Project.
In this campaign, the real data of observatories are provided to various groups from all over the world. The members of the campaign have a few days to study these data and register if there is any new asteroid and send the report of the new asteroid.
Then, experts of this organization will review the registered cases and will do the final temporary registration.
Kanoon members from Lorestan center succeeded at this stage and three asteroids out of eight ones they registered were recognized as “Authentic Discovery”.
In the final stage and after scientists reviewed, a process which may take long, after asteroids are discovered, they are numbered or named and registered in the list of International Astronomical Union along with the name of the ones who have discovered them.
While the talented Lorestan teenagers’ success is an indication of the new generation capabilities in the new scientific fields, supporting these talents is considered an investment for the countries scientific future.
This achievement is the result of the round-the-clock effort of the teenagers interested in astrology at Kanoon. One more time, the scientific potential of Iranian children and adolescents is displayed internationally.
Iran’s future scientists are discovering asteroids.
Kanoon members’ sharp eyes are not taken away from the sky for even a second so that Iran’s future space scientists’ talent to be able to discover unknown asteroids in close and far galaxies.
That day is not far when we come across asteroids’ names, when we see how familiar these Iranian names are to us in Systems of world-famous space organizations. Then the world will witness what magnificent talents live in great Iran who can turn into well-known scientists in the domain of science and technology and their names shine at the pinnacle of honor for Iranian scientists.
In the meantime and based on the information, Golestan Province as the secretariat of the International Exploration of Asteroids and with the supervision of Iran's Center for Modern Science and Technology (ICMST) has published, Kanoon members from 23 provinces have participated in three rounds of this exploration (20,21,22) and could succeed to register 21 asteroids.
The process is going on and in the 22 round which was summer 2025, selected groups from 12 Kanoon centers in the following provinces: Ardabil, West Azerbijan, Bushehr, Ilam, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Tehran, Khorasan Razavi, Semnan, Fars, Yazd, Qazvin, and Kermanshah altogether discovered 9 asteroids and they uploaded and registered their discoveries on the site through the secretariat of the exploration working at Kanoon center in Golestan province.
The efforts of Iran's Center for Modern Science and Technology (ICMST) which is a Kanoon subset have been done with the intentions of increasing practical astronomy education, promoting the skills of analyzing telescope data, improving telescopic data analysis skills and strengthening the spirit of research among Kanoon members.
The secretariat, as official Kanoon representative in this international exploration, is responsible to enroll all Kanoon groups on the website of the international project IASC.
The secretariat established in the Golestan Provincial Center under the supervision of KAFNA has meanwhile tried to take an effective step towards expanding modern education and flourishing the country's scientific talents, empowering the spirit of research, and raising Iran's position in the global astronomy arena by holding special educational and briefing webinars for provincial group leaders, creating a national group of trainers on the "Yes" messaging platform to exchange information and provide continuous support to the groups, producing several specialized educational videos and uploading them to the national group of trainers.
